So Long, London
My name is Carson McGrath, and I am a 21-year-old student finishing my third year at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. I am majoring in Journalism with a certificate in Political Science, and I am graduating next May. I had the opportunity to work as an intern at Jeremy Jacob Letting Specialists while studying abroad in London, and I am so grateful to have had the chance to learn so much during my time at this company.
I chose to study abroad in London because, ever since I came here for the first time when I was eleven years old, I knew it was a place I wanted to live one day. In order to test out what a future in London would actually look like, I made the decision to make London my home base for my study abroad experience. I wanted to be able to easily travel while abroad, which is very doable considering the variety of airports London has to offer. I also wanted to be able to spend a lot of time in and explore London while studying abroad. London is such a big city with so many things to do that every weekend I spent in London was always spent doing something new and exciting. I can definitely say that I made the right decision in choosing to study in London; it is the greatest city in the world.
Studying abroad in London has been the best experience of my life. I met so many kind and welcoming people during my time here, and I learned so much about the culture of British life and how to navigate London on my own. It was great to become extremely familiar with South Kensington, with Hyde Park being my favorite spot. I am so happy that this was the corner of London I called home for four months.
Before I began my internship at Jeremy Jacob Letting Specialists, I was nervous to work in a British office because I was not sure how different the working culture in Britain was compared to the United States. However, I quickly became close with my supervisor, established a routine and felt confident that I would make the most of my internship placement.
I enjoyed learning so much about the letting industry while working at Jeremy Jacob Letting Specialists. This is a field that I did not have any prior knowledge about before starting my internship, so I was very excited to have the chance to tour properties and even attend several viewings throughout my time here. This was extremely helpful because I hope to move to London one day and it was very informative to learn about letting in Britain and how the process logistically works.
I hope to pursue a career in the strategic communications industry, perhaps working on a political campaign one day. The skills I have strengthened while working at Jeremy Jacob Letting Specialists—how to be independent, creative and proactive—have certainly equipped me to succeed down the road.
I am very sad to be leaving London, and I do not think any extra amount of time in the city would make leaving any easier. I simply never want the experience to end, and I believe this is a sign that I need to make it a goal of mine to move here in a few years. I am incredibly grateful that I had the opportunity to live in London and that working with the team at Jeremy Jacob Letting Specialists was a part of my journey here.
