People still buy from people they trust
I went to the Landlord investment show last week at Kensington Olympia. Whenever I hear concerns of a one size fits all Uber style company coming along and taking out the whole Estate Agency industry, you do wonder about such a threat.
However, the Landlord Investment show demonstrated to me how many niche ideas and target markets that property companies are coming up with. I noticed one exhibiting Letting Agent that purely and only specialised in arranging tenancies for Tenants with Cats (bonkers I thought). I saw one Estate Agency which provided the outfit of an Estate Agency in a traditional sense but vouched that Tenants would never need to view a Landlord's property before starting a long-let tenancy. I struggled with this one.
There are so many hair brain schemes that are popping up in the property industry. Some are quite dynamic, and some questionably do not have any legs. Because there are many ideas and not one idea that seems to ever truly explode (okay, respect to Air BnB), I believe you cannot simplify the Estate Agency into a one size automated model. It still comes down to good old fashion "people buy from people" and creating trusting relationships. I don't see how the Uberfication of our industry can ever truly emerge sheerly for this reason.
