Design Museum
In November 2016 the London Design Museum relocated next to Holland Park on High Street. The new location has repurposed the previous Commonwealth Institute building into a testament of modern architectural design. The move took 10 years of financing and construction to bring the new attraction to Kensington and Chelsea.
The museum houses a free exhibit, café, craft studio, research area and special paid exhibits. The new building has tripled the size of the previous Design Museum, which is evident in its expansive exhibits. Contributory to the open interior layout, it is possible to explore all of the unique features and designs this museum has to offer in a few hours. For a full experience, a visitor can interact with designs and observe the free exhibit of design through the decades. The café is then available for a quick rest before going to the craft studio or a paid exhibit.
The paid exhibits rotate throughout the year, but are always worth visiting for a fresh perspective into the design world. Recently, the ‘Design of the Year’ exhibit showcased the ‘Best Designs of 2016’ for practicality and application to societal issues. The current special exhibit is Fear and Love: Reactions to a Complex World which displays bold designs of sexuality, sentient robots, slow fashion and settled nomads.
In just twelve weeks, the museum attracted approximately a quarter of a million visitors to its new location. This exceeds its previous annual visitor numbers, and is still progressing in popularity. The museum is an exceptional element that adds to the many attractions of Kensington and Chelsea. We at Jeremy Jacob strive to provide you the community, not just the home.
